Carbs and dairy should be like…staples. I drink at least a litre of milk a day and usually have pasta dishes for lunches or dinner most weeks.
Also, junk food’s kind of a trap, tbh, at least it is here. If you’re short on cash, home cooking is the way to go. Cook in batches and just chow down on as much as possible each meal – it’s easier to go back for seconds when you don’t have to hop in the car to go through the drive through again.
Also, for the love of god, don’t be afraid of fruits, vegetables, fish, lean meats, nuts…all that normal healthy stuff is still super important and your body still needs those nutrients. Being fat doesn’t have to mean eating greasy burgers every day – that should still be like…a fun treat 😛
Also, ice cream is insanely calorie dense, so if your body can handle large amounts of lactose, get into the habit of making thickshakes.
This is sort of one of those things you see especially in younger gainers who tend to take their health for granted where it’s just like…’oh diabetes is an old person disease’ or ‘I’ll worry about heart attacks and/or strokes when I’m older’ and it’s kinda like…well, no, you can’t do that because you’re playing with fire health wise; you have to get checked for these things and regularly, because through gaining you’re increasing your risk factors to obesity-related illnesses.
And to be fair, young guys tend to think we’re invincible anyway, so we tend to ignore our health even if we’re fit and skinny, but as a gainer you’re inherently playing with fire, and I think regardless of whether you have an unhealthy gaining kink or not, the reality of your life actually being in danger due to a major health complication is vastly different to fantasising about it.
And look, don’t get me wrong, the drive to gain is strong and hard to resist for us gainers, but you have to be level-headed about your health and well being. I know of some gainers that have some serious issues that are ignoring all medical advice and just continuing to gain, and that kind of mentality frightens me – in those instances, you’re not just playing with fire, but you’re pouring gasoline all over yourself and setting yourself on fire.
And maybe it’s just me, but I figure you can’t really enjoy being fat if you’re dead. So go to your GP. Get check-ups regularly. Look for signs of cholesterol problems, diabetes, blood pressure etc – and if your doctor sucks and just keeps telling you to lose weight, find someone who can work WITH you to ensure your long-term well being. You are getting fat on purpose – you need to be super responsible about your health.
And for the love of good, eat some salad and vegetables once in a while. Greens are not the enemy and you still need them in your diet. Getting fat isn’t just about eating tons of junk food and drinking gallons of beer – hell I barely drink at all, and look at me! – it’s about having a high calorie diet, but also still getting those essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients that your body needs.
Be. Responsible.
P.S. Apologies if I come across as overly harsh, but this is something I do feel rather strongly about.
This is why I set small goals, balance my diet and gain slowly. Love this post
